In the world we live in we have been conditioned to feel like any problem we have health wise there is a pill for it that will fix it. But what if there is a better way, a natural way, a way we were always meant to take?

Take Back Your Health quote over a clear blue sea with a floating buoy in the background.

In the world we live in we have been conditioned to feel like any problem we have health wise there is a pill for it that will fix it.

Diabetes; take a pill, or inject some insulin. High blood pressure; go on with your life but take a pill for it. Heart attack; another pill, stop eating fast food. But what if there is a better way, a natural way, a way we were always meant to take.

Full disclosure, I am a family physician, but I have always thought outside of the box. I grew up surrounded by Adriatic Sea, fresh air, fresh markets, food grown by farmers, fresh fish from the sea.

I always walked everywhere I was supposed to get to and water was a drink of choice. I spent summers on the island surrounded by grapes and fresh orchards, learning about earth and abundance all around us. I always hated cold and winter winds on the coast were an incentive to stay inside and learn more about life itself and who I wanted to be.

I am a firm believer that we all must own our health, take back our power and reclaim our lives. Becoming self sufficient in health, you could call it. For example, I am trying to lose some weight and yes there is a pill for that but what I am doing is instead taking charge of my life.

Starting with healthy balanced diet (in my case, low carb Mediterranean style diet with intermittent fasting) and daily walking building up to 3-5 miles run. My stress levels are high, as one can imagine, so for me music helps. I am also trying to increase the amount of sleep I get at night.

How does that translate to diabetes or high blood pressure or heart disease? You know that saying you are what you do, what you think, what you feel…Let’s take it further.

You are what you eat, drink, the amount of sleep you get, the stress you surround yourself with. So how do we take charge?

How do we change? How do we take back our health?

  • Re-evaluate your life and cut out things (foods, activities, people) that make you unwell.
  • Take care of yourself; body, mind and spirit.
  • Increase your water intake and physical movement.
  • Ensure your body gets the right vitamins through diet if you can and supplements where necessary (Vitamin D3, K2, vitamin C, B complex, selenium, magnesium etc.) All good for you.
  • Eat less. For some, intermittent fasting works well.
  • Try a low carb diet.
  • Avoid processed sugars, oil, processed foods.
  • Read daily.

Reclaim your life, one minute at a time, one hour at a time, one day at a time.

Learn to grow some of your food. Learn to cook new dishes, play with herbs and different tastes. Learn jiu jitsu, karate, climb a mountain. Listen to music, learn to play an instrument, solve puzzles, stimulate your mind.

It might not be easy, but it is a journey. Challenging but rewarding, and most importantly this is your life, your health. Take it back.
